Let’s get a little creative…

It’s one thing to get motivated to start something new,…
…but what do you do when productivity or “acting on the motivation to start” is hard to come by?

This is where creativity can be of great benefit.  Thus, it is time to focus on creating rather than producing.

And since January is National Creativity Month, there’s no better time than now to think creatively with regard to your goals.

Are you motivated to exercise but can’t find the time?
Are you motivated to eat right but confused about which diet is right for you?
Are you motivated to work on your stress and sleep, but not sure where to even begin to de-stress?

Let’s get creative as part of National Creativity Month…

Here’s some creative strategies I wanted to share with you to help you begin harnessing your creativity:

  1. Before you implement your workout program for 2019, encourage someone else to implement it with you.  Enlisting a buddy, creates motivation from two brains rather than one so not only will you have more accountability, but you’ll have fresh workout ideas from a brain other than yours.
  2. Before the start of your work week, personalize your workspace with creative, “stress-less” items.  To avoid burnout and remind yourself to do the best job you can at what you do, it’s important to have stress-relieving items visible and available to keep you productive. Think: Blue-blocking lenses for computer strain, candles (flame-less if you can’t burn them at your place of work), headphones to listen to relaxing music, essential oils to sniff when you need a pick me up, and perhaps even an exercise mat to take a break through your day with some stretches. Less stress leads to more productivity
  3. Once a week, set aside a bit of time where you try something in your life, or at your place of work that intimidates you.  It could be as simply as talking to that co-worker that intimidates you, or trying that spin class at the gym that you never imagine yourself doing.  Often, it’s the things that we fear the most that end up changing us the most and lead to becoming more creative in our life.
  4. Finish one thing. Many of us have all these irons in the fire that have yet to be finished.  Before you can harness the creativity in one area, you need to finish another. Take that task or that project that you have been putting off and schedule it in to be done.  Even giving yourself a deadline of when it has to be done.  Then, take a deep breath of fresh creativity for the next project.
  5. Talk Story.  In the Hawaiian culture, “talk story” is simply to take the time to sit and chat, listen, and learn from others.  Take time to others around you at the gym, or in your same field and ask them what inspires them, what creative workouts they’ve come up with that are affective, or career moves they made that made all the difference.  Sometimes we learn best from humans rather than hard-cover books.
  6. What worked for you in the past?  Remember that meal plan that helped you shed the weight and was easy to do? What if that is your body’s default and preferred way of eating?  Hop back into that and make some creative additions, such as creating new recipes with the safe foods on that protocol.
  7. Get creative with your day.  No time to work out? That’s what you think.  But what if while your baby naps, you turn on a 5 minute Workout video on youtube? Or going to bed 30 minutes earlier to wakeup 30 minutes earlier and engage in some early morning movement.  And there are plenty of fit options for desk jockeys to move throughout their day. I personally have this one and enjoy it!

All it takes is a little fore-thought, and a little creativity to create a healthier you in no time.

With regard to productivity, creativity is about connecting ideas.
